Is Your Brand Listening? What LGBTQIA+ Consumers Really Think

Written by Chi Tadina, Copywriter, with Research by Chin Ibuyan, Content Strategist

Every June, brands post rainbow-colored logos on social media, launch limited-edition merch overnight, and echo taglines about “love” across their platforms. But when we asked members of the LGBTQIA+ community how they really feel about Pride Month branding, the answer was clear: “It often feels like a marketing ploy, not a movement.”

Real allyship demands clarity and action. Take a hard look at what needs to change because here’s what LGBTQI+ consumers are saying loud, clear, and with love.

STOP the Rainbow-washing

The LGBTQIA+ community is increasingly tired of surface-level gestures that disappear after June. This “rainbow-washing” feels tokenistic when not backed by deeper engagement.

Here’s what to avoid if you want genuine allyship:

  • Changing logos without deeper action feels hollow
  • Pride campaigns without community consultation come across as disingenuous
  • Narrow queer representation to stereotypes (loud, flamboyant, comedic, or conventionally attractive) doesn’t reflect the full spectrum of LGBTQIA+ lives.
  • No follow-through after June ends signals that LGBTQIA+ lives are only worth seasonal recognition.

As one community member puts it, “Don’t just wrap your ‘support’ in a rainbow. We want substance, not seasonal solidarity.”

When brand efforts lack consistency, depth, or consultation, LGBTQIA+ consumers feel detached.

CONTINUE What's Working

Not all brand efforts are performative; many demonstrate care and integrity in their LGBTQIA+ engagement.

Champion Real Representation That Engages

DC Comics offers a powerful example. Kevin Conroy’s portrayal of Batman, with its themes of isolation and dual identities, resonated deeply with many queer individuals, echoing their own struggles.

Beyond this, DC’s upcoming fifth Pride Month comic anthology—featuring stories by and about queer creators and heroes—is a bold move from a brand traditionally associated with a male-dominated audience. This isn’t just a nod; it’s giving the community the spotlight to shine!

Make Every Step With Pride

Rather than limiting their efforts to rainbow-colored products, Converse has built a years-long movement around authentic storytelling, collaboration, and community-building, moving beyond mere rainbow-colored products. Their annual Pride Collection is co-created with LGBTQIA+ designers, artists, and advocates who infuse their lived experiences into each piece.

This commitment provides exposure and demonstrates the expansiveness of humanity and joy, fostering allyship that truly connects with the community’s soul.

START Showing Up For Real

Real support doesn’t start and stop in June. It’s embedded into how a company shows up daily. Here’s what the community says brands need to start doing now to move beyond rainbows:

Embrace Pride Within Your Organization

Strengthen DEI policies that protect and empower LGBTQIA+ employees. Embed inclusion in your company culture to make a healthy space where everyone feels seen, not just tolerated.

FYI, there are local industry groups that are shaping what real allyship looks like in the Philippine business landscape.

  • The Philippine Financial and Inter-Industry Pride works with companies to build inclusive workplace policies, run SOGIESC (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics) trainings, and create safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ employees, not just during Pride, but all year round.
  • The LGBT Chamber of Commerce champions economic inclusion and empowers LGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs through mentorship, networking, and advocacy, making sure queer professionals have a seat and a voice at the business table.

These groups are proving that progress is happening, and it’s worth building on.

Expand and Diversify Your Representation

“We are more than the most visible. We are diverse, complex, and everywhere.”

Sit and listen to the community so you can tell their stories, which will reflect the breadth of queer experiences: stories of identity, resilience, joy, and history. Remember: The best campaigns are informed by the people they’re meant to support.

True allyship means moving beyond the moment. It takes consistency and lived values to make a real impact.

STAY AWAKE even when June ends

Pride is a call to action: to reach out, recognize, and embrace uniqueness, and celebrate as one.

This month, ask yourself:

  • What will we STOP doing?

  • What should we CONTINUE doing?

  • What must we START doing?

The ones who rise to meet that call will be remembered not for the colorful campaigns they ran but for the commitment of their actions.
